Details
Dara lies along the wall the way a peanut shell sits in the hand: long, low, cornerless, with two unequal ends. The left one is small and tucks in tight. The right is broader, drops lower, and carries the heaviest wood of the piece. Between them the bottom edge lifts toward the middle and pulls the outline into a soft waist.
The top edge does something else. It climbs out of the small end, eases into a shallow dip, then swells again over the right before rolling down and around. Nothing straightens and nothing turns a corner. Put a lamp to one side and the highlight runs the whole band in one line, thinning along the upper left where the wood thins, pooling where it thickens at the far end.
Segmented glass, one band
The reflection is not a single sheet. Two fine vertical seams divide the glass into three panels: a narrow strip inside the small end, a wide middle, and a broader section filling the right. The panels follow the frame, widest where the wood swings out and narrow where it draws in. A flat sheet gives you one image; this paneled surface gives you the room in parts.
Solid stock, not a wrapped edge
The band is thick and rounded right through its section, with no sharp arris and no flat chamfer. Its width is not constant either, thinnest across the top left, clearly heavier at the right end and along the lower right. That change can only be cut from solid walnut. Veneer has to hold one steady profile, because the face is wrapped around a core, and it tells on itself wherever the curve tightens.
The color is a medium reddish brown, even end to end, satin rather than glassy, and the grain is quiet: soft streaks that travel with the curve rather than across it. No color jump or laminate line breaks the outline anywhere. The glass sits back in the wood, so the band stands proud of the reflection and leaves a visible shoulder around it.
Cut after you order it
Mehmet Ali makes these. Born in Konya, more than thirty-five years at the bench, every frame shaped by his own hands. The mirrors are a recent chapter, roughly two years of them; the workshop behind them is a good deal older. Nothing sits finished on a shelf. Yours is cut once the order reaches him, in the size you choose, so the walnut that reaches you will carry its own tone rather than matching the photographs.
Picking a size
Seven sizes. Hung as you see it here, the first figure is the run across the wall.
- 60 x 27 cm (23 x 10 inch)
- 75 x 34 cm (29 x 13 inch)
- 100 x 46 cm (39 x 18 inch)
- 125 x 57 cm (49 x 22 inch)
- 150 x 69 cm (59 x 27 inch)
- 175 x 80 cm (69 x 31 inch)
- 200 x 92 cm (78 x 36 inch)
The proportion barely shifts as the sizes grow, so the large ones stay long and low instead of climbing the wall. Dara settles over a console or a low entryway table that an upright piece would crowd.
Getting it to you
Pieces have gone out to around twenty countries. Each is wrapped in protective material and sent worldwide with a tracking number. Keep the walnut out of damp air; a dry soft cloth is all the frame will ask of you. Caught between two sizes? Send us the width you have to work with and we will tell you which we would hang.
Two more of the walnut wall mirrors lie low along the wall like this one. Sorel gathers its weight into a broad flat shoulder at the lower left; Liora sets its top and bottom edges against each other the whole way across.
