Catch Mira in the afternoon and the light will only find half of it. The frame turns as it travels around the oval, wide and soft through the upper left, narrowing to a slim band down the right side, so the wood never presents itself flat to the room. Walk past it and the highlight moves with you.

The outline is closer to a pebble than a circle. It never straightens and it never breaks into a corner, and it is a little wider than it is tall, which is why it settles so easily above a bench or a console instead of competing with the wall.

Walnut you can read

The grain follows the curve rather than running across it, heavier and darker low on the frame, opening out lighter and calmer through the upper left. That only happens when a shape is cut from solid stock. Veneer has to be wrapped around a form, and at a tight radius the pattern always tells on itself.

The glass sits back in a channel cut into the wood, and the inner edge slopes down to meet it, so you notice the thickness of the walnut before you notice your own reflection. It is a small decision, and it is the whole difference between a frame that is part of the object and a border stuck around a sheet of glass.

Made by one pair of hands

Mehmet Ali has been working with wood for more than thirty-five years. He was born in Konya, he still shapes every piece himself, and the mirrors are the newest thing to come out of his workshop, which is a good deal older than they are.

Nothing here sits in a warehouse. Your Mira is cut after you order it, in the size and the finish you ask for, and it will carry the color and the figure of the boards it came from rather than matching these photographs exactly. That is the part people tell us they end up liking most.

Choosing a size

Eight sizes, from 50 x 45 cm (19 x 17 inch) up to 155 x 141 cm (61 x 55 inch). Mira holds the same broad, nearly square shape the whole way up, so the larger sizes read as one calm mass rather than stretching out along the wall. If it is going above a piece of furniture, measure that piece first and leave the mirror a little clear wall on either side.

Getting it to you

Pieces have traveled to around twenty countries so far. Each one is packed in protective materials and shipped worldwide with tracking. Keep the wood dry and dust it with a soft cloth.
