Siena is the mirror you lean, not the one you hang. It stands on the floor and rises tall and narrow, and the shape is one long unhurried S: a rounded shoulder at the top, a fuller curve below, and a single deep notch on the right where the frame folds inward and flattens into a broad tongue that presses into the reflection.

That notch is the whole piece. Most mirrors keep the frame the same width all the way round so the wood behaves politely, like a border. Siena refuses. At the notch the walnut becomes the widest, quietest surface on the object and the glass narrows to let it through. Stand a step to the side and you can watch the front face rotate through the turn, holding the light on the flat while the edge just above stays in shadow.

Deep walnut, quiet grain

The wood is a warm red brown that goes darker toward the top and softens further down. The grain is fine here rather than loud, which matters: from across a room the frame reads as one continuous ribbon of color, and that is what keeps a shape this bold from becoming noisy.

There is no veneer anywhere on it. The frame is solid walnut, cut and worked until the curve is right, and every board carries its own color, so yours will not be a copy of the one in these photographs.

Made to order, by hand

Mehmet Ali has spent more than thirty-five years shaping wood, and he still makes each piece himself in his own workshop. Siena is started after your order arrives, in the size and finish you choose. That is why it takes what it takes, and it is also why no two are identical.

Choosing a size

Nine sizes, from 75 x 25 cm (29 x 10 inch) to 225 x 78 cm (88 x 31 inch). Siena stays slim the whole way up, so the smaller sizes work as slender wall pieces and the taller ones give you a proper head-to-toe reflection. If you want to see a full outfit, take one of the four largest.

It suits the narrow return of wall beside a wardrobe, or the gap by a bed where a rectangular floor mirror would feel like a slab. Once you have settled on where it stands, anchor it to the wall, especially in a room shared with children or animals. It is a real weight of solid wood.

Getting it to you

Where its frame goes wide and quiet at the notch, Vela does something close at the waist, in lighter honey wood, and keeps curving the whole way around. If the narrow gap you had in mind turns out to be a flat run of wall, Milan is the upright rectangle, matte, all four edges rippling.
